My Fifth Tightening

Hi Guys!

Well, as you may notice, I have skipped a tightening in my headings. My apologies for this. I have been very busy this days due to work overload.

My fourth tightening was on the 9th December 2015. This visit went just like most of the others. I decided to ask the duration of my teeth tightening during my next visit.

My fifth tightening was on the 13th January 2016. In this post I will give you an update on how my fifth tightening went and generally let you know how I am getting on with them. So here it goes!!

How The Tightening Went
As always I got there and my ortho asked how things were going. I decided to wait until after my brace had been changed to ask questions about how long I had left etc. This time I told my ortho to change the color of my braces. He showed me various colors and we finalized to have a combination of blue and green color braces.

As usual he removed all my current ligatures from my teeth using a hook, then popped out the wire from its grooves in my brackets. He then told me he was going to use that in a flossing motion between my two middle front teeth and between my painful canine and it’s neighbour to try and give the teeth a bit more room to move. The whole thing took about 15 minutes in total I’d say.

This time I got a fresh and clean set of blue and green ligatures (P.S. it looked really cute ).

So, next came all the important questions. I asked him how much time it would take to get the braces off and he told me that everything has worked very nice and I’ll be able to get that off in 2-3 months. I was really happy to hear this. I asked him about when I am supposed to get braces in my bottom teeth. I got to know that my bottom teeth weren’t too haphazard and so it will hardly take 1 sitting to get that done. Yippee..!!

He told me to keep up the good work on the cleaning and to book another appointment for 4 to 5 weeks time. I went for 4 to try and speed this thing up haha.

I am still really pleased with the transformation since before my braces. A lot of the changes now are more subtle and I can feel them more than I can see them 🙂

Overall
I am still very happy with how things are going. Being able to eat pretty normally, and being in a lot less pain is a definite win. I am still impressed with the way my teeth are moving; even it is subtle to everyone else. I am glad my next appointment is only 4 weeks away and I’m hoping I can continue to book close together appointments from now on, but we’ll see 🙂 Fingers crossed they come off within the 2-3 months as planned!

Right, I think that’s everything…although feel free to comment with questions if there’s anything I haven’t covered that you’d like to know. My next appointment is the 10th February so I guess I won’t be writing again until then unless there is something specific I want to update you on or any questions that need answering 🙂

Thanks for reading! Speak to you again in a few weeks (promise it will only be a few weeks this time)!

Till then, Stay Wow.!!

Time for my Third Tightening

Hello everyone!

Finally the day came for my third tightening. Before I proceed further, I would like to tell you that I have found major changes in my teeth and I am really happy with the result.

So moving further, I had my third tightening yesterday on 18th November, 2015. In today’s post, I will give you an update on how my third tightening went.

My 3rd Tightening

When I got there, my ortho asked me about how I feel and how were things getting on. I told him that I am really happy with the changes so far and this time I didn’t have any problem. No itching, no pain nothing.

My ortho told me that the progress is really good as per the usual time taken at this age. I was like Really..!! Yay..!! Yay..!! Yayy..!! My ortho was happy with the progress my teeth are making. I asked him about the timespan it will take to get all done. He told me that there is still time to go yet.  He did not mention any issues with cleaning stuff. Well, I was taking good care of it.

After looking long and hard, he set to work removing all my current ligatures from my teeth using a hook, then popped out the wire from its grooves in my brackets. The ligatures weren’t as painful this time. It just felt little tight else there was no pain. This makes me feel good as it shows that something is going to change, even if it does hurt a bit haha. Nothing was digging in the side of my mouth this time so it felt quite better.

The whole thing took about 15 minutes this time. I was feeling fresh and was expecting having a pain in 2-3 hours. He told me to keep up the good work on the cleaning and booked another appointment for 4 weeks of time, that is, 9th Dec ’15.

Conclusion

I am pretty pleased with the amendments so far!!! Really pleased to see changes in my top front teeth. Having a less pain is a definitely win. It’s really inspiring to see how my teeth move so well on the earlier stage. All my efforts are worth it.

I want to get things done sooner and I am excited for my next appointment that is after 5 weeks.

Pain

Before I went for tightening, my pain had stopped completely. Once I got my wires trimmed, there was nothing pricking my mouth and the aching completely died away. As my ortho said, I got minor aching for a day or two after the tightening for a particular tooth that was tightened but that was not at all a case of worry. Really, I didn’t even need pain killers. But yes having an ice-cream did help me feel good. I managed to eat normal food without any problems so all was good.

Breakages

Till now I didn’t face any issue in this. Thank God for this. I have been careful with what I eat and drink and also on cleaning.

Eating and Drinking

Well now, I am able to eat mostly all the things. I am a vegetarian and I am able to eat hard foods as well. Yes even Pizza. 😛 But still I try to stay away with hard things and avoid having cold drinks. I do not have the habit of cold drinks so that is not an issue for me. But if you are really addicted to it, you can avoid and in unavoidable times, try to drink with the help of straw to avoid its direct contact with the teeth. I am sticking to the rules of if I am going to have sugar then I would have few sweets, chocolates etc straight after my evening meal before I do my tooth brushing. I drink more water as my mouth gets dry fast and it’s good to drink more water. I don’t drink alcohol so no staining issue for me. If you have alcohol, then try to drink only shots of clear alcohol accompanied with a (separate) glass of water to avoid any sugary drinks. This might make your mouth more dry the next day so be cautious before you go for it. I avoid having tea and coffee and yes I miss them badly. I do intake coffee with the help of straw. But yes doing all the care is worth when you get such good compliments for your clean teeth. What do you think?

Cleaning

I do the regular brushing as mentioned in my old post and it takes me 5 minutes to clean my teeth. Try to keep a brush and a handy paste with you in case you want to brush after every meal you take at public places. Cleaning my teeth so often especially in the evening when I floss as well is a pain in the bum. Sorry I need to be honest, but I keep focusing on how worth it is.

So, this is it till now.. I have tried to update you everything I have been experiencing so far. My next appointment is on 14th Oct so I guess I might be writing you my further experience after my second tightening visit.

Should you need any further assistance or if you have your own experience, please do not hesitate to write me on comments. I would like to know your experience, tips and that would be helpful for other readers as well.

Thanks for reading! Speak to you again in few weeks..!!

Till then, Stay Wow.!!

5 Weeks in Braces.. My Second Tightening..

Hello everyone!

So I have had my second tightening on 14th Oct ’15. After my first tightening, I was aware of what is gonna happen and what can I expect, but was bit nervous and worried about it being painful.

So today I will be giving you an update on how my second tightening went.

Here it is..!!

My Second Tightening

As usual, my ortho asked me on how I was feeling and if I had any issues. This time I could say that there were few issues, although none he wasn’t already aware about.

About 3 weeks previously, I had made an impromptu visit to him as back molars started angling themselves in towards my tongue. I was concerned as the brackets were hurting the skin of my mouth and also I felt as if the wire was little out which was pricky. So he told me that the brackets were strong enough and would be ok, though he molded the wire that was pricking my skin which really relieved me. He cleansed my teeth and told me to gargle. That was it.

Today, he had a look at my teeth and seemed happy with the progress so far. He had no issues with my cleaning or the way things were moving so that’s made me feel positive. He started working on removing the current ligatures from my teeth using a hook, then popped out the wire from its grooves in my brackets.

He pressed my teeth and tightened the teeth. This time as the wire already hurt my mouth, it did hurt me little.

The whole thing took about 15 minutes this time. I was feeling fresh and was expecting having a pain in 2-3 hours. He told me to keep up the good work on the cleaning and booked another appointment for 8 weeks of time, that is, 18th Nov ’15.

Conclusion

I am pretty pleased with the amendments so far!!! Really pleased to see changes in my top front teeth. Having a less pain is a definitely win. It’s really inspiring to see how my teeth move so well on the earlier stage. All my efforts are worth it.

2 Weeks in Braces.. My First Tightening..!!

Hi guys,

Today I will be providing you an update of my first tightening..!!

Yes it’s been 15 days after I had braces and yes I must say I could feel the difference.

So I had my first tightening on 23rd Sep ’15. Frankly, I was really nervous due to the pain it may cause.

Below is the post on how my braces were tightened and what my experience is so far. Let’s roll down..!! 🙂

How the braces are tightened

The foremost thing my ortho did was made me relax and settle down and asked me how I was getting along with the braces. I told him that my braces were absolutely fine. I experienced the pain in the beginning of the week but then it was perfectly fine. Nothing much to report.

He had a look at my teeth to see how things were moving and happily he told me that he could do very good changes in the position of my teeth and also commented on how clean my teeth were. He told me that so far it was really a good progress and also I might be able to get my braces off earlier. (This was a “WOW” feeling for me, internal high five to myself at this point). So all over very happy and positive new to start my appointment.

He set to work removing and cleaning my teeth. Had a flow of water in my mouth which was little cold but it didn’t cause me any sensitivity so it was okay. He remove a ligature from the left of my teeth with a hook. He popped the wire into the grove on the bracket and began attaching the lig. He tightened my left side of the bracket and I could feel the pressure little bit. He told me that I might feel the pain for a day or so but not like before so I was little relieved.

So the whole thing hardly took 5 minutes in total. He told me to keep up the good work on cleaning process and booked another appointment after 5 weeks of time. That is 14th Oct ’15 and that was it!

Conclusion

I am pretty pleased with the amendments so far!!! Really pleased to see changes in my top front teeth. Having a less pain is a definitely win. It’s really inspiring to see how my teeth move so well on the earlier stage. All my efforts are worth it.

Got My Braces Done Today

Hi everyone!

I got my braces done today. And to be frank, I am hating it. Feeling like snatching it out haha, but more on that later.

Process Of Getting The Braces On

I went to my appointment at 9:15 today. I went and met my orthodontist. He explained me that my mouth needs to be completely dry. To start with, he put some cotton in the upper part of my teeth inside and widens my mouth with his gloved fingers. Then, he paints my teeth with something to clean my teeth and wash it off to make your teeth prepared for the glue. He told me that I am not supposed to taste that thing as it doesn’t taste good and luckily it didn’t hit my tongue. J

Then he dried my mouth to start the bracket fixing process.

My orthodontist told me to get braces on my upper part of the teeth only because there was no space if I get my braces on my lower part of my teeth and that will knock off or damage my bottom braces with my top teeth. So he advised me to get braces on the bottom part of my mouth after 3 months.

So, to begin with, my ortho started working on my left side first (top). Foremost, they stick the bracket to your teeth one at a time starting from the back teeth with glue. Once all the brackets were sticked, he removed any excess glue. He used a little blue light to fix the glue which he hold over each of the brackets in turn. The same thing was done to the right side of my upper part of my teeth. Eventually all the brackets were place to my upper part of the teeth.
Once this was done, they removed the cotton wool so that I can move my mouth. He then started preparing for fitting the wires. He then fitted the ligatures. Ligatures are basically the elastic bands that go round your bracket and hold the wire in place.

To put the ligatures in the wire, they basically clip it into each bracket individually. The back brackets have holes in them in which the wire is posted through and all the other brackets have a groove that the wire pops in to. The ligatures are then put over the bracket so that the wire stays where it should. Once all the brackets are attached, they trim the excess wire off using little plier type thing so that it doesn’t trouble your cheek.

Quick Tip: Move your mouth around and suck your cheeks in once this is done to check that nothing sharp digs in.

That’s all. The braces are done. I was told to gargle some water to help my very dry mouth and then was given a mirror. I was shaken when I saw my face in the mirror wondering what they’d done to my face.

Well.. Well.. Well.. I would say that getting braces on is nothing to worry about at all. It doesn’t hurt at all. It’s just little uncomfortable from the dryness of your mouth and the weird feeling that you feel after the braces are on. It feels like someone has binded your teeth haha. No doubt the braces are not at all heavy, but to your lips, it does cover them that feel massive and hefty.

After Care Instructions

My orthodontist advised to make an appointment after 15 days (next appointment is the 23rd Sep 2015).

Then he provided me some information on what to expect during the initial days which are as follows:

Pain

My orthodontist told me that as an adult, the initial pains could last up to 2 weeks, but may be less or none at all. If the braces are done at an earlier age, it would give less pain or no pain. The foremost type of pain is aching of the mouth as the idea of braces is to move the fibers that hold the teeth in place. To get this done, the force is exerted on the teeth which will obviously cause pain. To overcome this pain, he advised that some pain killer will help ease off the pain. Also, he told me that this would make eating harder for the first few days as any extra pressure will cause more pain. Another type of pain is sores and ulcers caused from the braces rubbing your mouth. To overcome this, he advised me a tube named Dologel-CT. We need to apply this gel on the affected area and gradually it should be fine.

Breakages, Staining and Sharp Wires

It’s not habitual for braces to break, stain and for the wires to dig in. My ortho told me to call him straight away if my brace breaks or brackets pop off. He told me that it will hardly take 5 minutes to trim this off and he has no issue doing it as often as needed.

What Not To Eat / Drink

Well, there is a pretty big list haha. My ortho said that in the initial days when there is pain, I should treat myself with liquid and soft foods. Hard/crunch foods are a BIG NO during this time as this could easily break wires and pop off brackets, as well not to eat sticky things like sweets, chewing gums and toffees as it would stick to your brackets. He also advised to avoid sugar wherever possible as this will stick to the braces and may cause cavities. He insisted me to brush my teeth twice a day daily. He told me that eventually when my mouth will get used to braces, I would be able to eat everything but during the early days, I need to take care. I was told to cut into small pieces as it would be easy to eat and will avoid any breakages.

As far as drinks are concerned, I was told to have lot of water, milk and unsweetened tea. It is a must to stay hydrated. I feel that my mouth gets dry often so I try to keep myself hydrated as much as I can. A Big No to cold drinks or any drink that contain soda as this does not really help your teeth so you need to be very careful with these. If in case, you have a craving to drink this, you can use a straw and drink as this would limit the contact of the liquid with your teeth also prevents staining. Also, a big NO to alcoholic drinks. I am trying to think of clear drinks without much sugar that I can drink so I will keep you posted if I find any. J

Cleaning

This is the most important part after having braces. My ortho advised me to clean my teeth thoroughly after every meal where possible and not to snack between meals. He recommended me an orthodontic cut toothbrush that contains a little brush to clean under the wires on the other end. I was told that it was important to brush concentrating on each tooth at a time. He said to brush along the gum line of all teeth first, then to brush the bottom of the teeth. Once the brushing is done, I could then use a fluoride, a non-alcohol mouthwash to rinse out. I asked my ortho if he could recommend me specific tooth paste, but he said that it didn’t really matter and I was free to use any tooth paste I like.

Today is First Day

It’s almost an end of the day and this is what I am thinking…

I have gone for metal braces as it was cost effective and it’s so visible. And I really dislike them.

Painful? Yes, it is. Since 3 hours after the braces are fitted, I could not feel any pain. But after that, I had a nonstop pain. It had pained a lot but not unbearable. It did get me little crabby with everyone around me because of this niggling pain. Combiflam did help reduce the pain to 70% and I was really relieved but yes it does not go away completely. So far, no ulcers have been formed so no need to apply the prescribed gel and also am trying to avoid as much as I can so that my mouth get used to it as early as it can.

Eating? Oops. I had khichdi, soup and bread today as thought this would be easy to eat. I tried to eat chapatti/roti, but it hurt so much. Managed to eat yogurt and yes ice-cream did help. Though ice-cream is cold, but it really relieves the pain. So it’s a big YES for having n number of ice creams haha. Having a glass of milk helped me fill my stomach. Tomorrow I am thinking to have porridge with banana in it or will make a banana shake for me. I really like having soup as it is tasty, healthy and also it does not require tooth work.

Brushing? Well brushing is not really hard. I have been taking 5-7 minutes and I am through. Don’t do it too hard as it will hurt you on gum line and it will definitely be very painful.

Look and feel? Hating it today.. but trying to get used to it. I don’t think they are as bad as I see them as everyone else is also amazed by them. I prefer smiling while taking pictures to avoid showcase of my braces which is really funny. Sometimes I just burst into a laugh but that makes me feel good so its really OKAY. But I noticed that if I take pictures from far, it does not really matter.

Conclusion

I am really happy that I took this decision to get the braces on. I know the initial days are going to be hard but I am sure that the end result will be fantabulous (fingers crossed) and yes I am excited to see some progress. The thought of the beautiful teeth I am going to have at the end of this makes it all feel worth it.

So this is it for today..!! See you in few weeks..!!

Braces at 26!

Hello guys,

This blog is regarding an adult orthodontic treatment that I am going to get it done.

I am 26 year old and its really difficult to take a decision of getting braces at this age. In India, its an age of marriage and getting braces at this particular point of time is really risky.

Till this years, I was afraid to get the braces done but then that’s not the solution. I also want my teeth to be straight and perfect. That would give me a perfect smile on my face.

Along with this, I am really worried on how will I cope up with the braces on during the months. Also, it would change the shape of my face and God knows how I am gonna end up with..

Right now, my teeth’s shape is like a Vampire teeth. Yess it is..!! Few of my friends do like my teeth but I feel like funny.

For now, I don’t have pics. But I will soon post my pics where you will be able to view the shape of my teeth.

Getting On Decisions

To finally get on the decision, I surfed a lot on GOOGLE to find what information can I get about adult orthodontics and also reviewed various blogs where people like me had taken such tough decision. After going through a lot of blogs, forums and  videos, I was quite amazed to know that there was much out there to help me showing their treatments and results.

This really inspired me to not only get positive for the treatment but also to write a blog so that viewers like me who are going through a tough time can review, clear their doubts and I can be of some help to people like I got.

Preparing My Mind

It was about 2 months ago that I decided to get my braces done by spending my hard earned money to get my teeth straightened. When I made this decision, I went to the regular dentist and asked him to check my gums and teeth and to ensure that there is not problem with that. The dentist checked very thorough and told me that everything was fine. He checked my front and back teeth and told me that it might get worse in the future. Due to improper placement of my teeth, I was not able to get my brush done all over my teeth so in future, it might affect my teeth.

I got a clean-up of my teeth before I go for the treatment. My dentist provided me the contact details of the orthodontist and I quickly booked my next appointment.

After 2 weeks, I went for my orthodontic consultation to know what could be done, how much would it cost me and in how much time the whole treatment will be completed. My orthodontist was very nice and put me at ease immediately. He checked all my teeth and provided instructions to nurse about what would need correcting. He then explained me various types of treatment and suggested me to go for metal or ceramic braces. I chose for metal braces as it was cost-effective for me and also there were less chances for wire breakage.

Finally It Begins

My orthodontist asked me if I was comfortable to get the process started right away. So I was really okay as on the first day, they were just going to take impression of my teeth.

Molds

Molds are basically used to take an impression of you teeth. Kinda works as a blue print of your teeth.

So molds are not really a pleasant experience, but yes i am happy to tell you that its not at all painful so you need not worry on that part.

The impression is taken with the help of a tray that fits over your teeth. The tray is filled with alginate and cake batter. It feels like a thick chewing gum. It is pressed in your mouth. You might feel a little pressure but its okay. Its not painful. Usually, the lower impression is taken first and then the upper impression is taken. They will keep this in your mouth for a while till this mixture sets and then will remove.

Conclusion

So this covers pretty everything till now. I have an appointment this Friday to get my braces fitted. I am pretty nervous and excited as well.

Once I get my braces, I will let you know my experience in my next blog. Stay connected..!!

Lots of Love,
